How the relay output contacts in industrial remote controls work

A relay is an electronic control device that features both a control system (also known as the input circuit) and a controlled system (or output circuit), commonly used in automatic control circuits. Essentially, a relay acts as an automatic switch, enabling it to control larger currents with smaller ones. An electromagnetic relay typically consists of components such as an iron core, coil, armature, and contact reeds. When a specific voltage is applied across the coil terminals, a current flows through the coil, generating an electromagnetic effect. This causes the armature to be attracted toward the iron core, overcoming the tension of the return spring. As a result, the moving contact on the armature makes electrical connection with the normally open (NO) stationary contact. Conversely, when the coil loses power, the electromagnetic attraction vanishes, allowing the armature to snap back under the influence of the spring force, re-establishing contact with the originally closed (NC) stationary contact. This cycle of attraction and release enables the relay to either complete or break the circuit, achieving its intended purpose.
In industrial remote controls, the relay output contacts are used to switch external devices on and off. When the remote control sends a control signal, the relay’s internal coil gets energized, generating an electromagnetic effect that moves the armature, thereby changing the state of the contacts—from normally closed (NC) to normally open (NO), or vice versa. This transition allows the circuit connected to the relay’s output terminals to either conduct current or be interrupted, effectively controlling the operation of the attached device.
Relay contacts come in two primary types: Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC). A NO contact remains open when the relay coil is de-energized but closes once the coil is activated. Conversely, an NC contact stays closed when the coil is unpowered and opens when the coil is energized. These two contact configurations provide flexibility, enabling relays to be tailored for various applications and meet diverse control requirements.
In industrial remote control systems, relay output contacts are commonly employed to manage high-power equipment such as electric motors, heaters, and lighting systems. Because relays can handle significant current loads, they are ideally suited for applications requiring robust power control. Additionally, relays offer electrical isolation between the control circuit and the load circuit, enhancing system safety and reliability.
The relay output contacts of industrial remote controls use electromagnetic action to switch the contacts on and off, enabling control of external devices. Their normally open and normally closed contact designs offer flexible control options, making them widely used in the field of industrial automation.
