How a relay works

2025-07-03

A relay is a critical electrical component primarily used for circuit protection and control, functioning by automatically detecting, regulating, or converting electrical signals. Its key parameters include coil voltage (e.g., 12V/24V) and contact capacity (e.g., 10A/250VAC), making it suitable for applications such as industrial automation and home appliance control—tasks that enhance both equipment safety and operational efficiency.
The working principle is based on the electromagnetic effect: when the coil is energized, it generates a magnetic field (with a magnetic flux density of approximately 0.5–1.2 T), which attracts the iron core and triggers the movement of the contacts (response time typically ranging from 5 to 15 ms). Special types, such as thermal relays, provide overload protection by utilizing the thermal deformation of a bimetallic strip (operating temperature between 50°C and 150°C), while time relays enable precise delay control ranging from 0.05 to 30 seconds.
When wiring, ensure proper voltage matching (keeping the control and load sides isolated), select the appropriate contact type (normally open/normally closed), and follow safety guidelines. Typical applications include motor start/stop control (to reduce inrush current) and PLC system expansion (to increase I/O capacity), among others.
