What does a car relay consist of?
2025-07-03
Automotive relays primarily consist of the following core components:
Electromagnetic system.
Coil and Iron Core: When the coil is energized, it generates a magnetic field. The iron core, serving as part of the magnetic circuit, helps guide the direction of the magnetic field and enhances its overall magnetic effect.
Armature and Return Spring: The armature is attracted to the contact point by the magnetic field, while the return spring ensures the armature returns to its original position once power is cut off.
Contact system.
Normally Open and Normally Closed Contacts: Contacts that are open when the relay is de-energized are called normally open contacts, while those that remain closed when the relay is de-energized are referred to as normally closed contacts.
Moving contact vs. stationary contact: The moving contact switches the circuit on or off as it moves with the armature.
Shell and leads.
The outer casing protects the internal structure, while the leads connect the control circuit to the load circuit.

Control system and working circuit.
Control circuit: Uses a small current to switch the relay coil on and off.
Working circuit: Contacts directly control high-current loads (such as motors, solenoid valves, etc.).
Additionally, automotive relays may also feature magnetic latching mechanisms or specialized mounting structures (such as PCB-mounted or socket-type designs) to meet the requirements of various application scenarios.
